Flutter Belgium's 18th meetup @Howest

Last night, Howest University of Applied Sciences had the opportunity to host Flutter Belgium for their 18th meetup. It was fantastic to see such a large and engaged audience of Flutter developers, Howest colleagues, and students. Flutter Belgium is the Google developers group for Flutter developers in Belgium. They organize multiple meetups throughout the year to gather all Flutter developers to talk about hot topics, projects, and new packages or features released. The meetups are always hosted by companies who support and/or are active in the Flutter community.

Flutter Belgium's 18th meetup

For the 18th meetup, we at Cyber3Labs got the opportunity to host their event. It turned out to be a huge success, with a large crowd of 60 attendees.

We started the evening with french fries, and as soon as everyone was fueled up, we kicked off with some Lightning Talks. Lightning Talks are short, 5-minute talks on any topic related to Flutter. During these talks, we learned about Flutter in the Bitcoin ecosystem, behavior-driven development, WebRTC, and received an inspiring talk about focusing on what you enjoy as a developer.

Next on the program were two in-depth talks: one about using object detection and OCR (Optical Character Recognition) in applications, and another on "Accessibility First: Building an App with Support for Various Disabilities."

Object detection and OCR

I was responsible for the session about object detection and OCR. I used my Digihub research project, Lambrecht Trailers, as a real-world example to explain how to implement real-time object detection on your smartphone, from data acquisition to deploying it to a Flutter application. In addition, I went into detail on the available packages for using OCR in applications to recognize and read text. It ended up being a truly enjoyable experience!
