Howest builds virtual showroom for furniture dealers
Initeam provides modular software packages tailored to various industries. With thirty employees, it works on creative business solutions for more than three hundred clients. One of its services is providing EPR software to furniture dealers. Initeam nurtured the ambition to expand that software to include a catalog in virtual reality (VR) and turned to Voka Digihub to do so. "We wanted to have a VR application developed and our product catalog of chairs, tables, seats,... into 3D models", says Patricia Vandelanotte of Initeam. "With these technologies, we wanted to explore how our customers could build and view room setups in 3D/VR."

Howest, known for its vast expertise in VR, went with the request. "We set up a demo room at Initeam to simulate a real furniture store. We created QR codes of a dozen or so test pieces of furniture. Then visitors could go through the entire user flow from A to Z", said Cesar De Greve, New Technology Researcher in Howest's Security & Privacy research group. "The system works like this: if you scan the code of a piece of furniture, you can see it in 3D and add it to your VR long list. Then you can go to the VR room where you can work with an employee to decorate the room to your liking. Your personalized room is then sent to the VR headset. Thus, as a customer, you can put together your ideal (living) room and view it in 3D, in a very realistic way." For furniture stores, this offers many advantages. "This ensures that customers can make their choice faster", says De Greve. "In addition, there is also less chance of customers returning furniture to the store later."
