Howest Virtual Mirror Prototype

With our virtual mirror, people can easily try on different clothes without the hassle of dressing rooms. Drag and drop a clothing piece from your favorite brand and step in front of our smart (AR) mirror. Because the installation only needs one product picture of a clothing item, it can be easily integrated with any existing clothing store.

Accessible and sustainable shopping experience

We unveiled our prototype at the Flanders Technology & Innovation festival in March 2024. Thanks to this mirror, people can very easily try on different clothes without the hassle of dressing rooms. Meanwhile, the mirror was already at 10+ events and 17,000 clothes were already fitted on it.

Because the installation only needs one product picture of a clothing item it can be easily integrated with any existing clothing store (or just any piece of clothing you have a photo from). With the use of AI, the mirror will detect a piece of clothing in most product pictures, no 3D models needed. Because the photo is taken from 1 angle, the back of the t-shirt is dynamically filled. You can drag and drop your favorite shirt from the web and fit it in 5 seconds using the prototype mirror.

The future of retail

What if you could try on clothes in seconds? With no queues, no hassle in fitting rooms. Or better, a digital fitting room in your home linked to each store. Visitors try on clothes they would never otherwise try on. Visitors can try on clothes that are not in stock, even after store hours. The possibilities are endless. With our first prototype of the virtual mirror, we want to take a look at retails stores of the future.

Virtual Mirror for accessibility & sustainability

Thanks to the virtual mirror, individuals in wheelchairs can try on clothes more easily. It is not evident for everyone to shop for clothes (small clothes booths, no elevators, inappropriate shopping streets). The virtual mirror provides accessible shopping for persons of any age.

Online/offline shoppers can try on the clothes before having them delivered. Because visitors first visually see how clothes fit on them, this reduces the chance of returns (less CO2). Clothes can be tried on before they are produced. Gone fast fasion, welcome smart fashion.

What's next?

Since this is only the first version of our prototype, we still see many areas where we can improve the product. Wouldn't it be nice if you could also try on shoes? Or that you can instantly share your outfit with friends for feedback, or that it automatically gives style advice. The visitors at FTI Kortijk were already enthusiastic, and they say there is a lot of potential.
