x-CITE - Expanding the Experience of Citizens through Extended Reality will advance the development of the CitiVerse as a tool for human-centric smart city transformation. x-CITE expand the experience and engagement of citizens through XR in the areas of urban planning, social engagement, culture and tourism.
The project contributes to Digital Europe objectives, accelerating valuable embedding of AI in the urban domain and contributing to wide usage of XR and metaverse technologies across the EU. The quadruple helix approach involves citizens, government, industry and academia in co-creating and sustaining development of urban solutions. The project enhances citizen participation, fosters inclusivity and creates a new urban paradigm integrating physical and virtual realms. It also seeks to shape a common framework for European authorities, emphasizing inclusive, ethical and interoperable adoption of virtual technologies in supporting decision-
making.

Role of Howest
The project results in recommendations for a federated architecture that enhances the CitiVerse capabilities. Through engagement with industry and smart city networks, the project contributes to the EU CitiVerse leadership, ensuring open, interoperable and ethical solutions. The project will develop guidelines for user centric solutions in the CitiVerse. The partnership involves leading smart cities, technology providers and knowledge institutions from Finland, Netherlands, Belgium and Türkiye, with use cases in Tampere, Rotterdam, Flanders and Istanbul.
The project provides a set of CitiVerse open solutions compatible with MIM Plus, building on the DS4SSCC blueprint and the LDT Toolbox and a roadmap outlining action points for maturity, sustainability and market readiness of CitiVerse solutions, emphasizing performance optimization, interoperability enhancements and privacy and security assurance. The project aligns with EU climate and smart cities and communities initiatives, fostering innovation and supporting a green, citizen-centric urban future.
Howest University of Applied Sciences is a leading player in the field of applied technology research and education. HOWEST integrates socially relevant and competence-oriented education, valorisation-oriented
research and services into its portfolio. Consequently, HOWEST is a strong "knowledge partner" working in close collaboration with and for the regional and international work field. As an inspirational knowledge hub, HOWEST University of Applied Sciences aims to be the reference for future-oriented and innovative study programmes alongside valorisation-oriented research and entrepreneurship with a special focus on emerging technologies and innovation.
HOWEST will participate in this project as a technological partner bringing her extensive expertise in XR-metaverse-decentralised economy-business models-vital cities into the project and supporting the pilots to be elaborated. Howest will take care of the immersive visualisation. The web3 and metaverse unit and business management research group of HOWEST will guarantee a multidisciplinary approach in the pilot development.
